Fire in Your Pulpit by Robert G. Delnay
Regular Baptist Press, 1990

I hope this book is on the required reading lists for homiletic courses that some of you are taking! If not, read it anyway. And for those of you who have been in the business of sermon preparation for a few years, read it. If nothing else, it will remind you of the awesome responsibility that you have every Sunday when you stand in the pulpit. It might even help you sharpen your pulpit skills, which get so easily rusted.

Dr. Delnay was one of my homiletics professors in Seminary, so re-reading this book was like sitting in a semester of his classes. He deals with the structure of a sermon, but points out the purpose of the structure is to make you a better communicator of the truths in God's Word.

The method that Dr. Delnay taught us for preaching for a decision, developing a proposition statement and developing the outline around that proposition, is the method that I've found almost universally applicable. Read the book and you'll be introduced to this method. It's simple to understand but takes some practice to get it smooth.

Book reading will continue, but I'm not sure how much time I'll get at the computer for the next five weeks. Camp and then our trip to the US will make for a pretty irregular schedule.
